What Entrepreneurs Can Expect from the Next AI Wave
Developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence are following one another at a breakneck pace. What was revolutionary last year is the standard today. For SME entrepreneurs, it is crucial not only to consider what AI can mean today, but also to look ahead to the trends of tomorrow. Companies that anticipate technological shifts can adapt their business model in a timely manner and capture market share while competitors fall behind.
In the near future, AI will integrate even more deeply into our daily business processes. We are moving from standalone AI tools to autonomous agents that can independently perform complex, multi-step tasks for your enterprise.
The Rise of Autonomous AI Agents
Where we currently still have to manually enter commands into tools such as ChatGPT, in the future we will be dealing with ‘autonomous AI agents’. These are systems to which you assign a specific goal (e.g., ‘Optimize our inventory based on historical sales data and weather forecasts’), after which the agent independently collects data, performs analyses, contacts suppliers, and takes action within your systems.
This elevates efficiency to an unprecedented level. As a result, SMEs can operate with the clout and intelligence of a multinational, without the associated overhead costs.
Ethical AI and legislation (AI Act) for SMEs
With the increasing adoption of AI, the need for regulation is also growing. The European Union has introduced the ‘AI Act’, the world’s first comprehensive legislation on artificial intelligence. Although this legislation primarily focuses on high-risk applications, SMEs will also be affected.
Entrepreneurs must be transparent about the use of AI systems (for example, when customers communicate with a chatbot) and ensure that the models used comply with privacy and copyright legislation. Establishing a clear internal AI policy is therefore advisable for every organization.
Investing in Human Capital
The most important success factor for AI in SMEs is not the technology itself, but the people who work with it. Investing in your employees’ AI skills (AI literacy) is the best investment you can make. As soon as your team understands how to use AI tools to make their own work easier and more enjoyable, your company’s productivity and innovative power will grow organically.
